NEWS LETTER ---APRIL 2002

Tullio ain't no foolio

1927
Tullio Campagnolo climbing the Croce d'Aune Pass

Tullio invented the quick release skewer after loosing a race as the result of not being able to loosen the wing nuts on his hubs with his cold hands.  This launched Campagnolo as a bicycle component manufacturer.  Rock Shox recently introduced a fork clamp system called The Tullio in honor of Campagnolo's contribution to the cycling world.

........."Some New Stuff ".........

Cannondale Caad 7
Made from aluminum baseball bat tubing....more or lessso frickin light it kicks butt wouldn't fit on the tubing sticker, so they called it OptiumCreatively manipulating the tube shape ensures that the CAAD7 has Cannondale's trademark efficiency, light weight and comfort.  This frame uses the Optium tubeset manufactured by a large domestic baseball bat company.  Sent to Cannondale and expertly welded, this makes for the lightest Cannondale bike.......ever.

Victory Through Air Power.

Full of hot air?                      Precision Pneumatic Shifting. With Airlines, the shifter is actually a precision pneumatic switch that's used to supply compressed air from the Air supply bottle to the derailleur. Shifting response is always fast and uniform because the mechanical linkage between  your hand and the derailleur has been replaced with the power of compressed air. Stress on the thumb and fingers is reduced not only by the feather-light push-button action, but also by the use of separate left and right shifters for up and down-shifting. Furthermore, the derailleur uses a special constant tension linkage that keeps spring pressure uniform regardless of gear. This means that Airlines offers uniform shifting speed and response characteristics regardless of the derailleur's position on the freewheel. Shimano recommends use of their special pneumatic fluid for flawless performance of this system.

Cannondale Gemini 3000 TandemA twinn for the bike named after the twinns
TIG-welded and heat-treated using 6061-T6 aluminum, the new Gemini 3000 tandem frame is designed for maximum strength to withstand hard-core, freeride-style riding.

The Gemini's versatility owes much to its captain / stoker independent adjustable rear suspension, which can be set to 140, 150 or 170 mm respectively. The new bike also features a delta main frame with a twin triangle design for superior strength and extra crotch clearance.

Hardy components in XTRRR

For the racer....    Shimano offers a new and improved version of the formidable XTR group. No compromises here. XTRRR was designed from the ground up strictly for off-road racing. Made to precision specifications from the highest quality steels and alloys, including titanium, each XTRRR component offers the ultimate balance of light weight, durability, and precision operation. Developed to reduce bicycle-induced stresses during  the heat of competition, XTRRR represents the leading edge technology of Shimano component engineering. If you race in the dirt, there's just no other choice.

 Campagnolo Posi-Traction Triple Crankset
Traction control for bikesCampagnolo will introduce the Posi-Traction Triple Crankset at the 2002 Paris - Roubaix in mid April.  Using the same technology employed in all traction drive trains on many current automobiles, it will allow for more pedal power to be transmitted in extreme cycling conditions.  The ten peaks of the large chain ring allow for close to 1000 pulses per minute of pavement gripping power at normal pedaling cadences.  These pulses all but reduce any slippage that would occur with a standard round chain ring. Look for this crank set to be available with all Campagnolo 2003 groups.

Last month's question:

What training method or technique works best for you?

Some of the responses:

Pruitt - "I do very light free weights while watching T.V. to work on my fast twitch muscles"

Axle in Jackson - " I ride in the morning before breakfast.  This way I stand a better chance at burning off some fat".

 This month's question:

What cycling innovation would you like to see introduced in the near future?

email us  path@frognet.net

Rod to the free wheel bod

The Campagnolo Rod Gear System

A precursor to the modern derailleur.

Flip the top lever to loosen the rear axle in the frame allowing the chain to slacken for derailment.  Pull or push the lower lever to send the chain onto the desired cog ( three or four cog freewheels were the norm ). Increase the chain tension in the horizontal dropouts and lock down the rear axle into the frame using the top lever.  Once you got the process down it was almost possible to do this maneuver while in motion.......without crashing.

Here are this month's web picks:
http://www.thewheelmen.org

A really slick web site is here that is devoted to bikes of the past.  Make sure you check out the photograph section.

http://birds.cornell.edu/pfw

Brown-headed Nuthatch in Ohio.  No, we are not talking about John.
This is the site for Project Feeder Watch (birds, that is).  Although the survey for this winter is ending, it is a good site devoted to our feathered friends in regards to well being, identification, and more

http://206.204.3.133/dir_nii/nii_artistdir.html

This is the Penny Nii art site that has several links to info about artist and examples of their work.  It is a nice site to browse.
